Female owned since 2011

Two sisters from Townsville. One busy Brisbane print shop.

We’re Suzie and Kat. We started The Tshirt Mill selling tees we designed ourselves at the Southbank markets. Fifteen years later we print custom t-shirts, uniforms and merch for businesses, clubs and creators all over Australia, from our own factory in Newstead, Brisbane.

Our story

From a spare bedroom to a factory floor

01
Townsville

Where it starts

We grew up in Townsville, then spent years travelling before we both settled in South East Queensland. Somewhere along the way we decided we’d rather make our own thing than work for someone else.

02
2011

A stall at the Southbank markets

We designed tees, printed them and sold them ourselves at Southbank. Talking to people at the stall every weekend taught us what makes someone love a shirt, and what makes them put it back on the rack.

03
Early days

One machine in a spare bedroom

Our first printer was a single direct-to-garment machine in Suzie’s spare bedroom. It printed two shirts every 20 minutes, and we thought it was the best thing we’d ever bought.

04
2015

We lost everything

In 2015 the warehouse we were working out of burnt down, and everything in it went with it: the machines, the stock, the lot. We started again from nothing.

05
The moves

Six warehouses later

Once we were back on our feet we kept outgrowing every space we were in. Six warehouses in all, each one a bit bigger than the last.

06
Today

Our own factory in Newstead

Now we’re at 11 Maud St, Newstead, with a team of 19, a neon sign and presses that turn out 500 shirts an hour. We still design, print, pack and ship every order from here.

The people behind it

Still hands on, every day

We don’t just own The Tshirt Mill, we run it, along with the two businesses we’ve built alongside it: DTF Direct, which prints DTF transfers for decorators Australia-wide, and Red Octopus.

And the crew

A team of 19 in Newstead

Behind us is a team of 19: printers, designers, packers and the people who answer the phone. From direct to film and screen printing to embroidery, every order is looked after by someone who works here.

Female founded, female led

Leading a male-dominated industry

Printing has always been a boys’ club, and we’re one of very few female-owned print shops in it. We’ve never let that slow us down. We’re early on every new print technology worth having, from direct to film to the presses that now turn out 500 shirts an hour.

It shapes how we run the place too: clear answers, no jargon, and no one made to feel silly for asking a question.
